Meet Lachlan Martin Team Leader Recruitment
Lachlan leads one of our recruitment teams to manage the end-to-end recruitment processes for our customers. He recently attended one of our internal leadership programs at HSS and shares how it has enabled him and his team to better support our customers across the WA health system. It’s just one of the many ways we are investing in our people.
“Taking part in the HSS Coaching to Engage and Empower program was an opportunity for me to build on my informal training as a coach and a leader. Since completing the program, I’ve definitely become a better leader.
Not only am I better equipped to coach my team, but I am a more effective delegator and have improved my time management. I also made invaluable connections with HSS colleagues during the course, whom I can now call on for advice and support.” – Lachlan Martin, Team Leader Recruitment.
What qualities do you think make a great leader?
A great leader is someone who is authentic. They take a genuine interest in building meaningful relationships with their team and they inspire greatness and hard work by painting a vision for the team to strive towards. They acknowledge their own strengths and weaknesses and they’re not afraid to make mistakes. They display empathy, are a great communicator and they focus on coaching their team to be the best version of themselves that they can possibly be.
One of the most valuable learnings for me was taking the time to coach ‘in the moment’. As leaders, we are often in a position where we are asked to come up with a solution or an answer. However, as coaches, the challenge is to lead our team down a path where they come up with these answers themselves. It is important our team is empowered, and are not afraid to make mistakes.
How has the Coaching to Engage and Empower program benefited your team?
Coaching is an important and powerful tool for every leader. It moves leaders away from the traditional directive, telling style of management to a more inquiring approach.
Applying coaching principles has enabled my team to feel more accountable and empowered to solve problems themselves and make good high-quality decisions for our customers. This allows us all to learn and improve as a team, so we can better help our customers.
