Meet James Mandy Manager Infrastructure Security
Say hello to James Mandy, Manager Infrastructure Security. James supports our WA health system customers by leading and managing a team that enables secure ways of working with technology.
“I’ve had a flexible working arrangement in place for several years and genuinely believe this way of working is vital for health and wellbeing.
I’ve promoted the idea of ‘work/life’ balance, but since further developing myself as a leader and manager, I think ultimately there is no work/life ‘switch’ but just ‘life’. In reality, things in our personal lives can positively and negatively influence our work, and vice versa.
Fortunately, at HSS, we have the right culture and resources to make flexible working a success. I lead a small team of seven technical experts and they’re working in ways that suit both them and the business, whilst delivering excellent outcomes for our customers. I’m helping to build a culture of ‘life’ rather than just ‘work’, where people can be their whole selves.”
What is your advice to leaders who are not keen on flexible working?
Leaders play an essential role in flexible working. Many leaders are still working in old ways of ‘effort-based’ work rather than outcome-based. Working flexibly has an incredible impact on individuals, empowering them to be more autonomous and bring more creativity to their work.
It also means everyone in the team can have equal opportunity to contribute, regardless of their situation. People’s needs change, and everyone’s lives are different. Operating this way is about getting from A to B rather than tracking how we got there. It is outcomes-based rather than effort-based.
Many HSS employees like James engage in flexible working arrangements for a variety of reasons. HSS is proud to offer flexible work as a way to support our workforce to be more agile, engaged and productive.
