Meet Jocelyn Tan ICT Graduate Officer
Meet Jocelyn Tan, an ICT Graduate Officer currently working in our ICT Applications Specialist Patient Care Systems team. Jocelyn is undertaking the WA Health Graduate Development Program to gain valuable experience in the development and implementation of health policies, programs and services.
Now in her second placement of the Program, Jocelyn chats with us about what her experience at HSS has been like so far.
What was your first week at HSS like?
My first week at HSS was spent mostly getting to know my colleagues and familiarising myself with the inner workings of the WA health system. It was also exciting to meet experienced professionals who were very welcoming to me as a graduate.
I started the Program working in the HSS ICT Application Design, Development and Integration team where I worked on the Clinical Workbench Project. Whilst with this team, I was involved in designing user interfaces, developing test cases for the application, assisting with bug fixes, and stakeholder engagement through facilitation of clinical application demonstrations. This was truly the highlight of my placement with HSS.
Tell us how you support our customers?
I’m currently in my second placement of the Program and working in the ICT Applications Specialist Patient Care Systems team. Here I implement fixes and enhancements to existing clinical applications used by our customers across the WA health system to assist them in providing excellent health care to their patients.
What has a typical day in the life of a graduate in our ICT business unit looked like for you?
As an early starter, I choose to start my day at 7 am. I come into work and prioritise my tasks for the day, attend stand-up meetings and go on a coffee run with my colleagues. Then I dive into supporting existing clinical applications in the Specialist Patient Care portfolio through functional enhancements and code maintenance. When the clock hits 3.00pm I go home and carry on with my day.
Why are you enjoying working at HSS?
I’m really enjoying working at HSS and I love that the organisation is focused on supporting employees to achieve a great work life balance. During both my first and second placements at HSS, I’ve been able to work flexible hours or work from home when I needed. My supervisors and managers have been very understanding about unexpected events that pop up in life which may require me to take a couple of hours away from work here and there.
I’d also like to mention that my colleagues at HSS are also some of the most wonderful people I have met and they are really great mentors and very welcoming to me as a graduate.
What kind of support have you had throughout the program from your leaders and mentors?
Working at HSS has been fast-paced and challenging, and so the support I received from my colleagues has certainly been very encouraging. My colleagues have been appreciative of my enthusiasm to learn and were always generous in helping when needed. My supervisor has also been very encouraging in providing feedback on my performance throughout my placement and this has certainly enabled me to identify areas where I could grow as well as improve.
Why did you apply for the WA Health Graduate Program?
I was interested in the WA Health Graduate Development Program because I knew it would be an exciting opportunity to make meaningful contributions to the Western Australian community. I have always been passionate about using my skills and knowledge to help others and I truly believe there is no better sector to do that in than health care. It felt like a natural fit for me to apply for the Program.
I also appreciated the opportunity to go on different rotations through the Program to discover my personal interests which would align with my skills and knowledge.
Would you recommend the Program and if so, why?
I highly recommend the Graduate Development Program at WA Health! The Program is very holistic and allows for a lot of room for growth whilst being greatly supported by your mentor, buddy, placement supervisor and of course our graduate coordinator, Alex!
You also have the opportunity to complete a fully-funded industry-recognised Diploma of Leadership and Management qualification through the Program. This Diploma allows you to build essential skills in leadership and management which I think will certainly add value to my career.
What is your advice for graduates applying for next year's Program?
My advice to graduates applying for next year's Program is to allow sufficient time to tailor your application as it is quite competitive.
Be your genuine self throughout your application and I trust that you would enjoy the recruitment process as much as I did!
Ask for feedback on your performance, especially if you are graduating from university and it is your first time applying for a job.
There is so much to gain just from applying for the Program, so go for it!
